Traffic part 1

Stuck in traffic last week because when roads were closed because the Sultan was going to address the Oman Council with his annual speech I had a flashback of memory from around 20 years ago. We were stopped at a traffic light by Bait Al Falaj. I looked at the right at the car next to us and I was shocked to find the Sultan driving on his own. The light turned green. He waived and went on ahead of us. I thought I had imagined the whole thing but when I turned back and asked my mom and dad it turned out I wasn't. Back then HM used to go out quite often in public like that. How things have changed.

A couple days later the roads were closed again. This time it turned out that it was because the Tunisian prime minister was in town. Can't they just put whatever visiting dignatary on a helicopter from the airport straight to wherever they're putting him/her up? Must we always suffer the consequences for ensuring the safety of these people. Muscat is a city with just one main highway connecting all its different parts together. You close that one road and you bring the whole city to a standstill.

I know in Dubai, Sheikh Mohammad drives his own car, and people in the posh parts of Dubai have seen him drive his jeep. It's nice on one hand to see the ruler mingle in with the crowd and not relying on high secuirty cordon everytime they go from A to B.

I honestly don't understand the reason for all this traffic. I know for a fact that it is not caused by diplomatic delegations or high priority personel because its been going on for quite some time now. All of a sudden, its taking so much longer to get from one place to the next. Its like the number of cars has multiplyed in the past month or so.

Mansur, I've actually seen Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid driving his own car in Dubai, but he's usually followed by like ten other cars. When I saw the Sultan here in Oman he was driving a car on his own and there wasn't a convoy behind him. Maybe one car if at all.

The taxi driver said "before, no traffic light no traffic, now, traffic light too much traffic"

I believe for His Majesty, he goes out sometimes alone driving his car. But, whenever he is going out official, so they will do something about the traffic.

Balqis, that taxi drivers is another case. They will jump ahead either it was their line or not!

Seriously people, the traffic is unbelievable. And its even worse now that its Ramadan. It takes so long to come back home from work. My working hours are 9 - 2, but I still arrive home like I did before ramadan when I finished at 230 pm. Actually, sometimes I arrive later.

Mux keeps trying a different 'shortcut' everyday hoping to avoid the traffic but nothing works. He ends up getting stuck everywhere.

He says its because we all finish work at the same now with the new timings. He is probably right.

I think I might as well stay at work until 230 and wait for it all to pass.
