Questions

I'm sure that we all agree that terrorists are scum. The only ones who disagree are the terrorists themselves. The remaining others who support terrorists are idiots. If you're one of those idiots please leave my blog right now and go back to the rock which you crawled from under.

The Guantanamo detainees are all terrorists, right? No? Well the US government says that they are, so how come we don't all accept that. How come there are many people think that they are being treated in an inhuman way. After all, terrorists are scum. Yes?

What if your government- wherever you are from- suddenly arrests a group of its citizens and holds them in a secret facility totally incommunicado. Out of reach of the outside world with no contact with anyone. No legal representation. Family and friends totally int he black about their wherabouts and what they're being accused of. All you know, is that they are suspects in a matter that touches on national security. They're under investigation. They're being questioned. Etc.

Would you consider that acceptable? Being a proud and loyal citizen of your country, would you consider the government's word enough or would you prefer a system where a trusted independent body can check, prod, question, etc to ensure that the rights of the detainees are not violated? Would you say that it's acceptable to take the chance that someone innocent might get caught in the aim of protecting the nation? Would you accept if torture has to be used to get suspects to confess of their crime and unravel their plans?

What if one of the detainees was your father or brother.. or even a good friend. Would you stop caring for him because you're told that he is a suspect in a national security matter? Would you still still agree to all the above?

Yes, I would. It’s better to be detained as a suspect, than having citizens from my country dead coz the Gov failed to protect them ! The call is very difficult, though the risk of tarnishing the peaceful image of the country weights far more than any other thing. We r suppose to look at the matter as a whole, as a nation. We should oversee our individualistic freedom for the sake of the nation unity, n security. am not blind ! But, I rather have the country safe than suffering by a group of cowardly traitors.

Devlish, your reply talks about physical threats to the country. You're relating it to the recent rumors in Oman that the people who were detained were planning to plant bombs in Muscat Festival. But what if the matter is different.

I'm sure we all agree that forming a militant group that aims to violently overthrow the government is a matter that warrants government intervention. Definitely a matter of national security, clear and simple. But what if a group of people get together and talk politics and then start discussing forming a political body with views that oppose the government. They don't want to disrupt anything. They just want to have a dissenting view. They want reforms. What if the government decides it doesn't want public dissention and arrests them on national security charges. Would you still be ok with that?

ummmmmm it depends on the track record of the Gov. If, the Gov had a track record of false claims, then I wont accept it.

Now that the names of 15 detainees have been published in Gulf News (2nd February), what would be the reaction of most people to them, their families and friends? The Minister of Information said it was not customary to publish names of those arrested, because, in the tribal nature of Omani society, this would create a stigma.

Could friends and associates of the detainees comment on their character? Are they militant, or fundamentalist? Have they been known to express views antithetic to the government? Do they support militarism? Is their argument with the nature of rule within the country? Do they want a stronger, stricter code of Islamic rule?

Could their views be accommodated within the existing democratic process (Majlis ash Shura)?

Are they likely to be stigmatised? I am curious.
